Chatsworth House

Chatsworth house is an amazing building with beautiful gardens, fronted by River Derwent and behind the building is the tree-covered hillside. Bess of Hardwick built the original house in the late 16th century. Many of the Elizabethan interior walls are retained by the modern house. The Tower on the hill dates from 1580, Joseph Paxton was appointed as the gardener by the 6th Duke who enriched the gardens and created the Emperor Fountain as well as the Great Conservatory that is now demolished.

The magnificent house and the surrounding park with wonderful scenery, woods and views of the house is an excellent place for gentle walks. There is a farmyard behind the house with farm animals. The Baslow to Rowsley road goes through the Chatsworth Park. Car parking is provided, the Sheffield bus comes directly to the door and the bus from Chesterfield will bring tourists to Baslow and from there either walk or take a 214 bus to the door.
