Hardwick Hall was built for Elizabeth Dowager Countess of Shrewbury. It is one of the finest Elizabethan houses. The house is situated near to the ruins of Hardwick Old Hall that stands in a commanding position overlooking the surrounding countryside. The original Old Hall is dated from the 14th century. After having a dispute with her husband, Bess of Hardwick came to the Old Hall at Hardwick and rebuilt it. When the Earl died she became financially secure and abandoned the Old Hall that was ruined to build a new one.

The massive windows and the fine proportions show the power and wealth of its creator. The hall is very noticeable with its windows and the amount of glass used. The Hall contains a remarkable collection of 16th Century furniture and paintings. Many of the walls of the rooms and staircases are covered by a large collection of huge tapestries and needlework. The house is situated in Country Park and the enclosed gardens around the house include a herb garden, orchard and decorative gardens.
