The Peak District has much to offer the more active visitor and for those who enjoy a leisurely cycle ride, a trip along the Monsal trail is a treat.
Running along the route of the former Midland Railway Line, and therefore relatively flat, you can enjoy 8.5 miles of unique cycling from Coombs Road, Bakewell to Blackwell Mill in Chee Dale. The route includes 4 recently opened railway tunnels, each about 400 meters in length and lit as well as two shorter tunnels that where already part of the trail.
The route is completely traffic free and suitable for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users.
About a mile outside Bakewell is the former railway station at Hassop, which in 2010 was converted into a café, bookshop and cycle hire facility. Being the former station, Hassop Station Café is right on the trail with a good menu for those needing sustenance and even better, for those wanting to cycle the route the cycle hire centre has bikes, tow alongs, child seats, junior bikes and even electric bikes, all reasonably priced and with expert advice on hand. The expertise continues into their well-equipped workshop where you can have your bike serviced and repaired.
The bookshop is well worth a browse with a wide range of local interest books on offer.
If you are planning to visit The Peak District, we would definitely recommend a trip along the Monsal Trail and if you are planning a trip along the Monsal Trail we would definitely recommend a visit to the Hassop Station Café.
