On a sunny day in The Peak District it is well worth a trip to visit the three great reservoirs of Ladybower, Howden and Derwent; together known as the Peakland Lake District.

The two upper dam, Howden and Derwent were constructed between 1901 and 1916 to provide water for cities in the North and East Midlands. It was a massive undertaking that lead to the flooding of the villages of Derwent and Ashopton with Ladybower, the largest of the three reservoirs, completed in 1945.

These Peak District lakes became famous as the practice grounds for 617 “Dambuster” Squadron as the towers on the Derwent dam were a perfect practice run for the Lancaster bombers.

There is a visitor centre and Dambuster museum in the area but most of all, on a sunny day it is a wonderful place to stop and watch the world go by and to enjoy one of the many walks in the area.
