Mam Tor
Peak District

United Kingdom
Mam Tor is an Iron Age fort overlooking Castleton and Hope valley is a famous viewpoint and landmark. Mam Tor is also known as the shivering mountain. It consists of shale and the East face is dramatic and loose expanse of crumbling rock. It was a large Iron Age fort on the top of the hill and the fortifications can be seen. A bronze axe head have been found here. The trig point on the top of the hill is placed on the top of a tumulus that is from the Bronze Age.
The tumulus is now hard to make out as the erosion forced the National Trust to pave the summit area. Leading from Mam Nick and from Hollins cross there are remains of two gateways on the paths. There are indications about the presence of a village. A fine view of Edale and Kinder to the north and Hope valley to the east and a splendid ridge from the summit down to Hollins cross and along to the Lose Hill can be seen from the summit.
