One of the quirkiest museums in The Peak District, The Bakewell Old House Museum counts as a real find.
The house itself dates back to 1534 when it was originally the home of a local tax collector. In the late 1700’s it was bought by Richard Arkwright who converted it into cottages to house workers for his new water mills.
The house fell into disrepair and at once stage the cottages were condemned until in 1954 The Bakewell and District Historical Society was formed to save the buildings and developed the house as museum.
The museum has 10 beamed rooms with traditional wattle and daub partition walls and a wonderful open fireplace.
It also boasts a rare Tudor toilet and Victorian privy for visitors to marvel at along with displays of lace, textiles and elegant costumes.
Visitors can also experience life in a Victorian mill workers cottage as well as dressing up in authentic Tudor costumes.
Admission is very reasonable at £3 for adults, £1.50 for children with under 5’s FREE
