Perveril castle is a medieval castle founded in 1080 by William Peveril. The castle stands on a cliff top above Castleton in a secure position flanked by the steep side of Cavedale. The castle is a suggestive place with an impressive view in all directions and ruined remains. After Tudor times the castle fell into disuse and became ruined until the remains was restored this century. Through the remains of the gatehouse that was built in the 12th century, the Castleton entrance leads in to the main courtyard of the castle.

The remains of a curtain wall can be seen around this and the remains of the keep are dominating the site that was built by Henry II in 1176 which is still well preserved. Originally the keep was about 60 feet high with a face made with gritstone blocks. The keep dominates the view across both Castleton and Cavedale below. English Heritage is taking care of the castle.
