Close to Matlock Bath, in the heart of The Peak District, a popular attraction especially for families is the unique Heights of Abraham and since its opening in 1780 has remained of the The Peak District’s most popular tourist destinations.

Original visitors had to make the steep climb on foot but since 1984 have been able to enjoy the journey up in Alpine style cable cars which not only are easier on the legs but also afford fantastic views across The Peaks.

The site of the Heights of Abraham was originally a lead mine, thought to have been mined since the Roman times and whilst the mining has long since ceased, the network of naturally formed passageways and caverns remain allowing visitors to take guided tours of the Masson and Rutland caverns. The tours give you a real taste of what it would have been like to have been a lead miner in the 17th century.

Even on a sunny day though, take a fleece as the caves are never warmer than 7oC !

In addition to the caves there are adventure playgrounds, restaurants and gift shops
