Over 10,000 recorded climbs of all types of difficulty with a wide range of gritstone and limestone crags can be seen in the Peak district. The Peak district is one of the popular climbing areas in Britain. Most of the first climbing was done in Laddow Rocks and Castle Naze, many routes in Stanage Edge was officially 'out of bounds'.
In the Chew valley there are gritstone crags that provide strenuous hard gritstone routes, Laddow has easy routes and the Longendale valley provides an enjoyable selection of climbs when the conditions are right, with a complete range of climbs there is a concentration of gritstone crags around the moors above Hathersag.
Higgar Tor, Burbage Edge and Millstone Edge have hard and strenuous routes while Froggatt Edge is easier and sheltered. Derwent valley and Curbar Edge are like Millstone Edges but Baslow and Birchens Edges are easy, Gardoms Edge is green and wooded with varying standards of routes. The Peak in the west has gritstone edges that are relatively small and broken. The limestone edges provide a different climbing experience with the steeper rocks and less friendly cracks. |
